Sixty-one paintings by the young Chinese artist Wang Yani introduce us to a harmonious world of the imagination. The graceful expressiveness of this child’s pictures is as captivating as their technical accomplishment is astounding.
At the age of two “Yani somehow found her way into the world of art,” as her father, Wang Shiqiang, reports. Recognizing his daughter’s exceptional talent, he encouraged it carefully, without subjecting it to the strict rules of traditional Chinese painting.
From animals, flowers, and landscapes Yani creates a world of images in which she tells stories, captures moods, and expresses feelings. The many-shaped animals and figures in her pictures discover their environment just as it presents itself to the young artist. Yet Yani does not simply reproduce in a naive fashion the things she observes so closely. Instead, masterly brushwork and an intuitive sense of composition give rise to a poetic and artistically imaginative interpretation of what she sees.
The texts preceding the plates provide information on Yani’s life and insights into the development of her art, revealing amongst other things its deep roots in traditional Chinese painting.
